Monadnock Historical Societies ForumNewsletterVol. 2, No. 6 November 2007 Fall Roundtable Meeting RecapThe fall meeting of the Monadnock Historical Societies Forum met in Troy on Thursday October 18th and was hosted by the Troy Historical Society. A big thank you goes out to President Bob Hall and members of the Troy Historical Society for organizing a wonderful meeting, providing tasty refreshments, and securing a warm and sunny fall day for us to enjoy. The fall meeting was organized into three different sessions. The first was our traditional Roundtable meeting held in Kimball Hall, home of the Troy Historical Society. Twenty-two people representing thirteen different organizations engaged in an active Roundtable session of sharing, which included past and upcoming events, building needs and successes, and updates on long-term projects. For the Roundtable's second session, we walked the short distance to the newly restored Troy depot to explore aspects of Cheshire County's railroad history. This session, more like a story circle, was guided by the reminiscing of John Marrotte. John worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad for 40 years. He began his railroad career in his home town of Troy, working out of the now restored depot. John spoke about his B & M career, telling stories about his first job at the Troy Depot, on taking new positions and relocating to new communities in New England and New York state, and the many changes he experienced with technology and management over his long career with the Boston and Maine. Interspersed along with John's reminiscing were questions, comments, and additional stories from other group members that generated a wealth of insight into the history of the railroad during the second half of the 20th century. We held our third session after our brown bag lunch in the Troy Depot to learn more about railroad history and the restoration efforts by the people in Troy. Ralph Wentworth of Troy started the afternoon session by talking about the financial aspects and obtaining grants to restore the depot. Restoration carpenter John Satas spoke about the process and the many challenges there were to restore the old depot. And then there were more stories by John Marrotte, his family, and others to conclude a wonderful day of sharing stories about the railroad. We wish to thank John Marrotte and his family for helping make this an intimate and informative session on railroad history, and all the other participants that helped make this a great Roundtable meeting. Next Collaborative Project Will Focus on Schools and Education in the Monadnock RegionDuring the Roundtable session in Troy, Tom Haynes proposed that the next collaborative project by the Roundtable Forum be changed from libraries, books and printers to schools and education in the Monadnock region. This change was proposed to coincide with Keene State College's celebration of its 100th anniversary of its founding in 1909. After a good discussion, members present at the Troy meeting agreed to change the collaborative project to Schools and Education. A sub-committee of Roundtable members will be needed to create and organize the exhibit and publication. If you would like to be involved in this creative process, please contact Tom Haynes at 352-1895 or dired@hsccnh.org. Horatio Colony House Museum to Host February
