Dartmouth College Historian to Speak at Wyman TavernJuly 2008 In this presidential election year, the Historical Society of Cheshire County is focusing its 2008 Wyman Tavern Lecture Series on early politics in New Hampshire. The first lecture will be given by Dr. Jere Daniell, Professor of History Emeritus at Dartmouth College, speaking on "The Revolutionary Origins of New Hampshire Politics." Dr. Daniell's presentation is at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2008, at the Wyman Tavern Museum located at 339 Main Street in Keene. Dr. Daniell is a scholar in the field of Colonial history. His presentation on NH Politics begins with the Revolution, when the politically ambitious at all levels of government, began to "run" rather than "stand" for office. Newspapers proliferated, thriving on what their editors labeled "Electioneering News." By the turn of the 19th century, there were clearly defined political parties. This presentation on early New Hampshire politics is sponsored by the New Hampshire Humanities Council. This lecture is the first of the 2008 Wyman Tavern Lecture Series. Future lectures include a presentation on "Wrangling and Mud Slinging: Early Politics in Cheshire County," by Eric Lindquist on Thursday, August 7, and "Franklin Pierce and Politics in Antebellum New Hampshire," by Peter A. Wallner on Thursday, August 21. Individuals wishing to attend this lecture should contact the Historical Society of Cheshire County at 352-1895 as seating is limited. |
