Teacher Workshop on Immigration at HSCC July 1-2

A workshop for teachers on immigration history will be offered on Wednesday, July 1 and Thursday, July 2 at the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene. Immigrant Experiences in the Granite State: 1860s - 1930s is a two-day workshop for educators offered in conjunction with the Historical Society's feature exhibit, Coming to Cheshire County: The Immigrant Experience, 1860s - 1930s, which opens on May 16 and runs through September. The workshop will explore the reasons why ethnic groups left their homelands, where they settled, and what they found when they arrived. It will examine aspects of immigrants' culture, how they were received by local residents, and how American policy makers responded to the growing numbers of immigrants in the United States. The workshop is supported by the New Hampshire Humanities Council, Ariel Printing, and the Ashuelot Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Workshop presenters include Graham Warder, assistant professor of history at Keene State College; Robert Perreault, an educator, writer, and independent scholar from Manchester, NH; Margaret Langford, professor of modern languages at Keene State College; and Tom Haynes, the Historical Society's director of education. The workshop will be held at the Historical Society, 246 Main Street in Keene. The cost for attending is $30, and the registration deadline is June 19. Teachers will receive 12 hours of professional development credit for attending both days of the workshop.
