Wyman Tavern Receives Community Support

The Historical Society of Cheshire County has received support from members of the community for opening the Wyman Tavern Museum to the public this summer. "Tavern Keepers - as contributors to the Wyman Tavern are called - allow us to keep this historical structure open to children, members of the community and visitors to the Monadnock Region," said Alan Rumrill, Executive Director of the Historical Society, which operates this valuable Revolutionary War structure as a period museum. The Tavern was built by Captain Isaac Wyman in 1762 and operated as a tavern for 40 years.

Preserving and operating historical structures is costly, and requires strong community support. To date, 9 individuals and families have stepped forward to help, each contributing the cost of running the museum for one week. 2008 Tavern Keepers include: Juliana Bergeron; Mary Louise Caffrey and Ken Stewart; Rick and Betsey Church; Susan Landers-Gilbert; Peter, Neil and Cathy Jenness; Bob and Jan Weekes; Norm and Barbara Woodward; Bob and Lisa Wyman; and Gail Zachariah.

The Wyman Tavern, located at 339 Main Street in Keene will be open to the public through August 30th on Thursdays through Saturdays, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and by appointment. A quilt exhibit will be on display from June 21 through August, and a series of programs on 18th century life for children and a lecture series on politics and elections will be offered in July and August. For additional information on these activities and a full schedule of programs visit the Society's web page at www.hsccnh.org or phone 352-1895.
