Day-long Children's Program on the Power of Ice at Historical Society

On Friday, January 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Historical Society of Cheshire County will hold a children's program on the science of ice and the history of ice harvesting in Cheshire County. The Power of Ice will explore the vital industry of ice harvesting in Cheshire County from 1800 to the 1930s. Participants will learn about the properties of ice by doing scientific experiments, design an insulated "Polar Brrr" to keep ice intake for a long period of time, and examine ice harvesting tools and other historical artifacts.

Chesterfield teacher Laurel Powell will be teaching this camp, which is open to all Cheshire County students in grades 4 to 8. Cost for the camp is $20 for members of the Historical Society and $25 for non-members. Each participant should come prepared with winter gear, snack, drink, and a lunch for the day.

To register or for further information, please contact the Historical Society at 352-1895 or contact Tom Haynes by email at dired@hsccnh.org. The Historical Society of Cheshire County, located at 246 Main Street in Keene, is open to the public on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
