Documentary on the Hurricane of 1938 to be Premiered

August 2008

A documentary film on the Hurricane of 1938, produced through a cooperative project entitled, "Reflections: An Oral History of the Monadnock Region," will be premiered for the public at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at The Colonial Theatre in Keene - on the 70th anniversary of this powerful storm, which devastated the Monadnock Region. The premiere is free and open to the public.

The "Reflections" project was undertaken by the Historical Society of Cheshire County, the Keene Public Library, the Keene Sentinel, Cheshire TV the Monadnock Institute at Franklin Pierce University, and Keene State College to collect and preserve the memories of individuals who lived through and participated in events and activities that shaped the identity of the Monadnock Region. The documentary features original photographs, film footage, and interviews with area residents who lived through the storm. The images tell the story of the terror that people felt as the storm raged and the devastation that greeted residents when they emerged from their homes the following morning.

"The Hurricane of '38" and at least four additional documentaries on local historical topics will eventually air on Cheshire TV. The program is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact the Historical Society of Cheshire County at 352-1895.
