Sale of Keene Historic District DVD Tour of Keene's Main Street to Benefit Wyman Tavern

The Historical Society of Cheshire County has received permission from the City of Keene to sell copies of a documentary DVD on the Downtown Keene Historic District, which was created by the Keene Heritage Commission and the Keene Historic District Commission. The DVD is a tour of the west side of Main Street in Keene, NH, by historic preservation consultant Elizabeth Durfee Hengen and historian Richard Scaramelli. The DVD is for sale for $10.00, and proceeds from sales will benefit the preservation and maintenance of the Wyman Tavern. The Wyman Tavern at 339 Main Street in Keene was built by Captain Isaac Wyman in 1762 and operated as a tavern by his family for 40 years. On the National Register of Historic Places since 1972, the Wyman Tavern is operated by the Historical Society of Cheshire County as a period museum.

The Keene City Council approved the creation of the downtown Keene Historic District in 2004 to "…recognize, preserve, enhance, and perpetuate buildings, structures, and sites within the City having historic, architectural, cultural, or design significance." The Historic District Commission was created at the same time to establish the standards and guidelines for the District. A map of the Keene Historic District may be viewed at the City of Keene's website. The DVD documents the distinctive character and historical and architectural significance of the buildings around Central Square and Main Street, beginning at the Horatio Colony House Museum and proceeding up the west side of Main Street to Central Square.

The Historical Society of Cheshire County is located at 246 Main Street in Keene and is open to the public on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, Wednesday, from 9 am to 9 pm, and Saturday morning from 9 am to noon. For further information, contact the Historical Society at 352-1895 or view its website at www.hsccnh.org.
