Series VII, SUBJECT FILE
This record group consists of seven series and encompasses the years 1736-1983. The series are BUSINESS, CHURCHES, CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS, WOMEN OF THE ROTARY, MUSIC CLUB, SCHOOLS, and SUBJECT FILE. The materials are arranged chronologically within each folder unless otherwise stated. The group is stored in sixteen legal size archive boxes.
Keene was granted by the Massachusetts Colony in 1733 and named Upper Ashuelot. The first settlement was made in the mid-1730s by Nathaniel Blake, Josiah Fisher, Jeremiah Hall, Seth Heaton, Nathaniel Rockwood, and Elisha Root. The earliest settlers were victimized by Indians; a number of residents were killed in raids. Consequently, the settlement was abandoned in April of 1747. The local Indians burned twenty-seven of the thirty-one buildings in town; the fort and meetinghouse were destroyed. The first permanent settlement was made in 1749, when the proprietors returned. Keene was incorporated under its present name on April 1, 1753. The town accepted a city charter in 1874. The population was 756 in 1775 and more than 1300 by 1790.
This record group is the largest and richest in the library. All of the series are very good in the areas which they cover. However, the materials on clubs and organizations must be singled out. Not only are there three boxes of material in the CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS series, but two clubs, Women of the Rotary and Music Club, are extensive enough to warrant series of their own. These related series are simply the most complete and extensive.
