Record Group Number 7

Hinsdale

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill - Keene, New Hampshire

March 1983

Hinsdale is a small group consisting of one series, "SUBJECT FILE", and is filed in one folder. The group covers the years 1803-1964. The group is filed chronologically within each subject unless otherwise stated.

Hinsdale was granted to the proprietors of the town of Northfield, Massachusetts in 1687 by Chief Nawellet of the Squakheag Indians. The town was settled in 1737 by Daniel Shattuck. Other early settlers were Peter Evans, Robert Cooper, John Evans, and Colonel Ebenezer Hinsdale. Hinsdale remained part of Northfield until 1741. It was granted under the name of Middle Monadnock, No. 2, to Jonathan Hubbard and thirty-nine others on November 30, 1749. The town was officially incorporated on September 3, 1763 under the name of Hinsdale in honor of Colonel Hinsdale. The early settlers suffered at the hands of the Indians. Several residents were killed, wounded, or captured by the Indians during the 1740's and 1750's. Five hundred twenty-four (524) people lived in the town in 1790.
