Record Group Number 5

Gilsum

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill - Keene, New Hampshire

March 1983

This small group includes one series, "SUBJECT FILE," housed in one folder. The collection encompasses the years 1775 - (1826 - 1864) - 1975. The materials are filed chronologically within each subject unless otherwise stated.

Gilsum, New Hampshire, was granted to Joseph Osgood and seventy others in 1752 under the name of Boyle. It was granted again on July 13, 1763 to Samuel Gilbert and Thomas Sumner. They settled the town in 1764 and used the first syllables of their names to form the town name of Gil-Sum. Other arriving in 1764 were Josiah Kilburn, Peltiah Pease, Obadiah Wilcox, Ebenezer Dewey, and Jonathan Adams. 298 people resided in Gilsum in 1790.

The letters are the most interesting and largest group of materials in the record group. They are all addressed to either George W. or Oscar G. Hammond. One is from a cadet at the U.S. Marine Academy, 1846, one concerns a military appointment, 1862, most of the rest are from a soldier in the field, 1862-64.
