Record Group Number 46

Jerusalem Lodge, No. 4, Westmoreland

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill

December 1985

The Masonic Lodge known as the Jerusalem Lodge, No. 4 of Westmoreland, was chartered on August 3, 1792. Charter members were George Aldrich, Amos Babcock, Samuel Works, Joseph Burt, Alphens Moore, Jonas Butterfield, David Brown, William Estey, Jason Wait, Isaac Estey, Phinehas Daggett, John Wheeler, and Nathaniel Blanchard.

From 1797 to 1807 the Lodge was empowered by the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire to meet alternately at Westmoreland and Walpole. After 1828 the Jerusalem Lodge made no annual return to the Grand Lodge, and on June 9, 1840, it was one of twenty-six lodges in New Hampshire to have its charter declared forfeited. On June 8, 1841 the Jerusalem Lodge was restored to its former standing and rank. Eleven years later, however, on June 8, 1852, the Lodge was again removed from the rolls, apparently for inactivity. This was the final act of the Lodge.

This record group consists of the record book of the Jerusalem Lodge from 1792 to 1803. The records are filed in one archive box and are filed chronologically. These materials were photocopied by the society from the original record book in October of 1985. The records were loaned to the Society for this purpose by Stanley Johnson of Keene and of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire.
