Record Group Number 42

The West Association of Ministers in the Province of New Hampshire

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill

April 1985

The West Association of Ministers in the Province of New Hampshire was formed on June 10, 1767 at Walpole, New Hampshire. The ministers present at the first meeting were Fessenden of Walpole, Olcott of Charlestown, Sumner of Keene, Hedge of Warwick, Lawerance of Winchester, and Goddard of Westmoreland.

The purpose of the Association seems to have been to provide an arena for religious discussion. Religious questions were posed and answered and public lectures given at each meeting. The group also compiled a fund to be used to build a public library for the use of the members. They also examined candidates for ordination at the various churches in the region. The group met quarterly until 1813, after which they met once or twice annually until 1818.

The record book of the Association, which is the basis of this record group, contains the minutes and resolutions of the regular meetings of the group. A typed transcription of the record book is also included. Furthermore, a biographical director of members and other persons mentioned in the records as well as a bibliography of related readings are also included in the group. This group was donated to the Historical Society in January of 1985 by Robert W. Harvey of Essex, Connecticut. It is stored in one archive box.
