Record Group Number 37Sons of Veterans, General S.G. Griffin Camp No. 10Compiled by John W. Harris November 1984 The Sons of Veterans (known after 1925 as "The Sons of Union Veterans") was a fraternal and patriotic organization, organized and run on quasi-military lines and open to sons and grandsons of Veterans of the Union Army in the Civil War. It functioned, in some ways, as a sort of junior auxiliary to the G.A.R. The Keene Camp, named for General Simon G. Griffin (for whose biography see Record Group 27, Series V, Folder 5) appears to have been first organized some time before 1888. The G.A.R. directory for that year (Series I, Folder 7) lists 27 "brothers" of the S.G. Griffin Camp, No. 30 (sic), one of whom is called "Past Captain". This first organization does not seem to have flourished, since there is no further mention of the Sons of Veterans in the G.A.R. directories until 1902. Meanwhile, the S.G. Griffin Camp was mustered afresh in 1901 (see Series I, Folder 2). For some reason not explained in these papers, only three of the 27 bretheren of 1888 appear to have rejoined in 1901. The remaining 2 disappear from the records. The Camp seems to have petered out in the middle 1940s. Its bank account was closed in 1942, but it was represented at Memorial Day observances at least as late as 1945 (RG 27, Series V, Folder 11). The records here preserved, which are far from complete, were acquired by the Historical Society with the G.A.R. Records, when the G.A.R. Hall was closed in the early 1970's. The records have been divided into two series, the first comprising all documents through which members may be identified. The membership records show the name of each member's father (or grandfather) and the latter's Civil War record, i.e. regiment, length of services, wounds, etc. The membership records of this organization may thus be of some use to historical genealogists. A majority of the miscellaneous material in Series II, a subject file, comes from the period 1906-1916. It would be of interest primarily to someone studying the organization.
