Record Group Number 32Ladies Charitable SocietyCompiled by Alan F. Rumrill February 1984 and August 2000 Ladies Charitable Society of Keene, New Hampshire was formed as the Reading Society on July 1, 1815 by the ladies of the First Congregational Church. The members met weekly to read the bible and other religious works. They also planned to aid the suffering and the needy. The rules of the society read as follows:
The name of the society was changed to "The Charitable and Reading Society" in 1817. The first president of the group was Eunice Appleton. The early work of the society included starting a sabbath school, a charity school, making pillows and sheets for the poor, working for Indian missions, and sending money to aid the Greeks. Mrs. Zedekiah Barstow became president in 1820 and remained in that post until her death in 1869. The society was incorporated as the Ladies Charitable Society of Keene, New Hampshire in 1885. All local religious denominations were represented in the society by that time. The group served to "render assistance to the aged and poor of the city." The society continues today and aids the community through "relief of the needy...provision of health service..., (and) assistance...in educational and recreational opportunities", according to the revised by laws of 1951. The Series I, II, and part of III, of this collection of materials contains the records of the secretaries and treasurers of the society, as well as its history and constitution. The secretaries records are complete from 1815 to 1949. The records of the treasurers date from 1832 to 1973, with the exception of 1851-62 and 1897-1913. (It appears that two volumes are missing, thus creating these gaps.) This group is rich not only in social and economic history, but also in the history of many important Keene families. In August, 2000, additional materials were compiled and added to this Record Group 32, and consist of bank statements, stock statements, membership lists, tax records, financial statements and proposed budgets, etc. The collection is contained in 6 archival boxes.
