Record Group Number 29
Marlow Hand Written History
By Elgin A. Jones
Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill
May 1983
This group consists of three series entitled "ROUGH DRAFT", "GENEALOGY", and "SUBJECT FILE". The group is filed in two legal size archive boxes. The materials cover the entire history of the town of Marlow, from c. 1740s, before the town was inhabited, to c.1920s. The rough draft materials are arranged in "chapter" form as Jones arranged them and the genealogical materials are arranged by surname unless otherwise indicated.
Elgin A. Jones was a long time resident and historian of Marlow, New Hampshire. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1874. For more than sixty years following his graduation he wrote about the history of his hometown of Marlow. Among his many works were "The Autobiography of Solomon Mack", "The Evolution of a New Hampshire Town", "Water Power on the Ashuelot River", and several versions of the town's history. Only one work was ever published: Notes on the History of Marlow, N.H., 1941.
Many of Jones' personal papers now reside with the Historical Society of Cheshire County, Inc. of which he was a member. This unpublished history of Marlow is from these papers. A rough draft of this history and Marlow genealogical notes are included in this record group. Jones' typescript version of the history, which has been given a table of contents by the society, is not stored with the group as it is complete, excluding genealogy, and is easier to use if not intermingled with the various folders of material in the group. The typescript copy has been cataloged and shelved with the regular monograph collections.
