Record Group Number 24

Cheshire County

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill

May 1983

This record group consists of two series: I. POLITICS, and II. SUBJECT FILE. The group is housed in three archive boxes. The years 1747-(1793-1983) are represented by the materials in the group. The items are filed chronologically within each folder unless otherwise stated.

Cheshire County occupies the extreme southwestern corner of the state of New Hampshire. The county contains twenty-three towns. Cheshire was one of the five original counties and was officially incorporated on March 19, 1771. The present Sullivan County was originally included within Cheshire. In 1790 the population of the county was 28,753 with 4,796 heads of families. The fourteen towns of Sullivan County were included in this total. Cheshire was divided, with the present Sullivan County being removed, in July of 1827.

This is a comparatively large, but very fragmented, record group. Series I, POLITICS, is noteworthy because of the large number of examples of political party tickets, as well as the names of the politicians involved, from the latter half of the nineteenth century. Series II, SUBJECT FILE, has one grouping of materials worthy of additional mention. Tourism in the County is well represented within this group. Most of the relevant materials are publications of the Monadnock Region Association, 1959-83. These materials can be found in folders 31, 32, 45, 46, and 47.
