Record Group Number 23

Winchester

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill - Keene, New Hampshire

June 1983

This is a small record group consisting of one series entitled SUBJECT FILE is filed in two folders. The materials cover the years 1756-(1830-1978). The items are arranged chronologically within each subject unless otherwise stated.

Winchester was granted in 1733 by Massachusetts to Josiah Willard and others under the name of Earlington. Willard had settled the area in 1732. The name was later changed to Arlinton and still later to Winchester. Indians sacked the settlement in 1746. Consequently the town was abandoned for nearly five years. On July 2, 1753 New Hampshire regranted the area to the same proprietors. The town was soon divided as Hinsdale was set off from it. More than 1200 people resided in winchseter in 1790.

One of the most important items in this group is an announcement by Alriira Wheaton concerning her opening of a "Se1ect School" for "Young Ladies" in Winchester. Location, times, courses, and fees are outlined in the announcement.
