Record Group Number 21WalpoleCompiled by Alan F. Rumrill - Keene, New Hampshire May 1983 This record group consists of one series, SUBJECT FILE, and is housed in five file folders. The materials in the group encompass the years (1775 - 1844) - c. 1970. The items are arranged chronologically within each subject unless otherwise stated. Walpole, New Hampshire was granted to John Flint and others by the Massachusetts Colony in 1736. The town was given the name of No. 3. John Kilburn made the first settlement in 1749. Walpole was regranted in 1752 to Colonel Benjamin Bellows and sixty-one others under the name of Walpole. It was incorporated the same year. Part of Walpole was incorporated into Langdon in 1787. More than 1250 people lived in Walpole in 1790. Three groups of material are worth special mention. The business records include a contract to build "a substantial brick house," Aaron P. Howland was the future owner of the house, Jonathan Mason the builder. Several items relating to the construction are included: they encompass the years 1820-1828. A handwritten booklet entitled "St. Peters Church, Drewsville, Account of Communion obligations, beginning Easter 1844. Being the beginning of the ministrations of Nath 1. Sprague", (as rector), is included. The account concludes in 1851. Finally, the proprietors records consist of eighteen pages of copies of records concerning the grant of Walpole as No. 3 by the Massachusetts Colony. The years 1735-1751 are covered.
