Record Group Number 2

Chesterfield

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill - Keene, New Hampshire

March 1983

This is a small group consisting of one series entitled "SUBJECT FILE." It consists of two folders of materials. The group covers the years (1797-1849) - c. 1975. The materials are arranged chronologically within each subject unless otherwise stated.

Chesterfield, New Hampshire was granted in 1752 as "No. 1" and regranted as Chesterfield in 1760. It was settled the following year by Moses Smith and William Thomas who came up the Connecticut River in canoes. The population in 1790 was 1,903.

Approximately one third of this material deals with the local militia. These pieces give an interesting insight into local militia units of the early 1800s. This group includes rosters, calls to inspection, exemptions from service, and even a receipt for a thirty-two gallon cask of geneoa. There are also six business related letters to the firm of Graves & Gangler, manufacturers of "steel auger bitts," 1847-49.
