Record Group Number 17

Sullivan

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill - Keene, New Hampshire

May 1983

This is a small record group consisting of two series entitled SUBJECT FILE and SULLIVAN COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER and filed in three folders. The materials encompass the year (1814 - 1901)- c. 1987. The materials are filed chronologically within each subject unless otherwise noted.

Sullivan was incorporated on September 27, 1787 being made up of the adjoining corners of Stoddard, Packersfield (now Nelson), Keene, and Gilsum. The first settler, Stephen Griswold and Benjamin Olcott, arrived in 1768. A small portion of Keene was annexed to Sullivan in 1794. Two hundred twenty persons lived in the town by 1790.

The items in this group do not focus upon any one subject or area of town history. T. Jewett Locke's brief history of the town is useful ready reference in that area. Joseph Mason's name arises several times in the materials (Deeds and Tax Records, 18l4-22).
