Record Group Number 11MarlowCompiled by Alan F. Rumrill - Keene, New Hampshire March 1983 This record group consists of three series entitled DEEDS, SUBJECT FILE, and NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS. The group occupies one legal size archive box. The materials cover the years 1783-(1800-1941)-1961. The items are filed chronologically within each subject unless otherwise stated. Marlow, New Hampshire was granted to Elias Alexander and others in 1753. The town was originally called Addison. It was regranted to William Noyes and sixty-nine others in 1761 and renamed Marlow after and English town. Thomas and Samuel Gustin, Jasper and Nathan Huntley, Elisha and Solomon Mack, and Joseph Tubbs were the first settlers. Much of the extreme eastern side of the town was annexed to Stoddard in 1797. 207 people resided in Marlow in 1775, and 319 people at the census of 1790. A large majority of the materials in this group are deeds. These materials cover the years 1783-1908 and involve dozens of town residents. Nearly 200 deeds are filed in this series. The SUBJECT FILE series contains three distinct groupings of materials worthy of mention. The first is a telephone log of the Marlow forest fire of 1941. The days of April 28 to May 6 are covered. The second grouping consists of Old Home Day materials. Sixteen pieces covering the years 1899-1961 are included. Third, and perhaps most impressive, are the Marlow Academy items, which are filed under Schools. Catalogs, insurance policies, loan receipts, commencement programs, and reunion programs for the years 1850-1901 are included. An additional grouping of materials recently added to this collection also deserves special mention. This grouping consists of eight pages of the original town record book. The pages include minutes of town meetings and encompass the years 1781-1786.
