Record Group Number 1

Alstead

Compiled by Alan F. Rumrill - Keene, New Hampshire

March 1983

This is a small record group consisting of one series, "SUBJECT FILE," and one folder of materials. The items in the group cover the years 1788 - (1820-1903) 1980. The group is filed chronologically within each subject unless otherwise stated.

Alstead, New Hampshire was granted by Governor Benning Wentworth in 1752 and was given the name of Newton. However, the original grantees did not comply with the charter and lost their title. Alstead was regranted to Samuel Chase and seventy others in 1763. It was incorporated during the same year. Simon Baker, Issac Cady, and William Druse settled the town during 1764. The population in 1790 was 1,112 people.

Several (5) pieces in this group relate to Aaron and Stephen Brigham, during the years approximately 1800-1840.
