Programs

Audio Visual

HSCC currently offers five educational slide/tape programs. These self contained programs run from 15 to 18 minutes each and are accompanied by study packets with teacher's guide. Each of these programs focus on a specific aspect of Cheshire County or New Hampshire history.

The Friendly Tavern
This program discusses the history of the lodging industry in Cheshire County, from the taverns of the 1700s to the bed and breakfast inns of today.   Multi Era 3 to 10

Covered Bridge Ramblings
This program traces the history and development of covered bridges in New Hampshire.   Multi Era

The Little Red Schoolhouse
This program tells the story of schools and education in Cheshire County from the 1730s to 1876.   Multi Era 2 to 6

When Johnny Comes Marching Home
This program examines Cheshire County's involvement in the Civil War on the home front and on the battlefield.   Era 5

Steel, Wheels and Track
This program explores the history of the railroad in Cheshire County.   Multi Era 1840s to 1940s

Video

Out of the Storm
This 60 minute video documents a part of the aftermath from the 1938 hurricane, and the experiences of West Virginians who came north to help salvage trees in the Monadnock region.   Era 8

The Abenaki of Vermont: A Living Culture
This 28 minute video is a unique contemporary view of Abenaki people that focuses on the objects they make and the things they do that connect them to the traditions of their forebears, their history, and their values that guide their lives. An extensive teachers guide accompanies the video.   Era 10

New England's Great River: Discovering the Connecticut
The 410 miles of Connecticut River valley has a rich history. This one hour video explores some of this history: from the Algonkian people who fished its waters and farmed its fertile lands for thousands of years, to the French and English who fought for supremacy over it in Colonial times.   Multi Era

Gluskabe Stories
This 80 minute audio cassette by Joe Bruchac offers mainly traditional Abenaki stories that were told only from September to May to insure that during the busy summer people were working and not dreaming. The stories were used to entertain, yet also to pass along important cultural values to both children and adults.   Era 1


Living History and Classroom Presentations

Captain Isaac Wyman: Stories from 1790
Captain Wyman will visit your classroom to talk about life in Keene and Cheshire County around 1790, including stories on the Wyman Tavern and tavern life, life of children, the war for independence, changes that occurred since his arrival in Keene in 1762, and the Vermont and New Hampshire land controversy.   Era 3

The Home Front During World War II
Jim Ross grew up in the region and remembers what life was like at home and in school during the World War II years. He shares his experiences in your classroom on rationing, air raid drills in schools, blackouts at night, and the sense of togetherness during the war. This program is offered in association with the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire that focuses on life at home during World War II.   Era 8

The 1890s: Depression and Gold Fever
Frank Barker was born and raised in Keene and lived through the Depression of 1893 and went off to seek wealth and adventure during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1898 in the Yukon Territory of Canada. Tom Haynes, HSCC's Director of Education will talk about the 1890s and how the depression effected life in Cheshire County and the country, and will retell Barker's adventures during the Klondike Gold Rush from his photographs and letters.   Era 7

HP 1 Keene During the 1920s
A social history of Keene during the 1920s.   Era 7
HP 2 George A. Wheelock, Naturalist
A short biography by Samuel Wadsworth.   Multi Era 4 - 7: 1818 to 1906
HP 3 A Journal of the Expedition Against Quebec, 1775-1776
A journal written by Ebenezer Tolman from Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, and documents the experiences he and his comrades had in their expedition against Quebec during the American Revolution.   Era 3
HP 4 Civil War Diary of Wyman S. White
Wyman S. White was one of many residents of Cheshire County to fight in the Civil War in 1861. A native of Fitzwilliam, N.H., White enlisted in the Union Army's 2nd United States Sharpshooter Regiment. His diary contains a biographical sketch about his life as well as accounts of his entire war experience.   Era 5
HP 5 The Faulkner & Colony Mill
The Faulkner & Colony Mill operated for 138 years, and was one of Keene's more predominant and important business. This packet tells the history of the mill, how it operated, and the many changes it when through over it long life. Photographs, time line, bibliography, map, and an overview of the early New England woolen industry are included.   Multi Era 4 - 9: 1815 to 1953
HP 6 Reverend Aaron Hall's Oration
The oration delivered by Hall in 1788 was in celebration of the ratification of the Federal Constitution in which Hall was a delegate from Keene. Packet includes a biographical sketch and bibliography.   Era 3
HP 7 Child Labor in Cheshire County
The story of child labor in Cheshire County mirrors what was occurring throughout the rest of New Hampshire and New England. Different perhaps in scale and number of children in the work place, the types of work children performed were much like their counterparts in places with similar economic and environmental conditions.   Multi Era 5-7: 1850s to 1910
HP 8 Persis Foster Eames Albee: The First "Avon Lady"
A short biography of Persis Albee of Winchester, who used her good business skills and entrepreneurial spirit to become the model of success in selling door-to-door as the first "Avon Lady."    Multi Era 4-7: 1836 to 1914
HP 9 Brigadier General James Reed
A biography of James Reed, who became a Brigadier General in the Continental Army and early proprietor of Fitzwilliam.   Multi Era 2-3: 1724 to 1807
HP 10 Amos Fortune, Exemplary Citizen
A short biography of Amos Fortune of Jaffrey.   Era 3
HP 11 Edward Carrington Thayer
A short biography of Edward Thayer, industrialist and philanthropist of Keene.   Multi Era 4-6: 1828 to 1898

Photo History Packets

Photo packets include 8 to 10 photos on a specific topic or place and includes a teacher's study guide.

PP 1 Photos of Central Square, Keene
Eight photographs of Keene's Central Square area dating from 1858 to 1960. The students may be asked to arrange the photos chronologically and then explain why they chose that order. May be used to discuss change over time, the development of technology, architecture, transportation, clothing and other aspects of society.   Multi Era 4 - 9: 1858 to 1960
PP 2 Work and Technology in Cheshire County, 1875-1921
Ten photographs of a variety of work scenes in Cheshire County between 1875 and 1921. The students may be asked to identify the tasks pictured, discuss how the tasks were accomplished, and how the same jobs would be done today. The packet may be used to discuss technological developments, labor conditions and the arrival of the Industrial Revolution in our region.   Multi Era 6 - 7: 1875 to 1921
PP 3 Transportation in Cheshire County
Ten photographs of a variety of transportation formats used in the region during this 100 year period. The students may be asked to identify the forms of transportation covered and then discuss technological developments, environmental impact, change over time, and other aspects of transportation history.   Multi Era 5 - 9: 1850 to 1950
PP 4 The Logging and Woodworking Industries of Cheshire County
Nine photographs depicting lumber-related industries, arranged in order of production, from the harvesting of trees to manufacture of the final product. As with the other packets, students may discuss advances in technology by identifying the tasks and tools shown in the photos. They may also discuss how the same task would be accomplished today. Designed to help students understand one of the most important industries in the region.   Multi Era 6 - 10: 1870s to 1990s

Lesson Plans

LP 1 Abner Sanger Goes to School
Eight activities based on the Journal of Abner Sanger. Sanger kept a detailed diary in Cheshire County for 1774 to 1794. The diary was published by the Historical Society with an index, glossary, biographies and additional information. Please request the number of copies (up to 10) of the published diary you would like to accompany the packet. (middle school level).   Era 3
LP 2 George Washington's Letter: Interpreting a Primary Document
HSCC has in its collection a letter written by President George Washington in 1794. Although the letter has nothing to do with the history of Cheshire County, it nonetheless provides an important introductory lesson and classroom activity on interpreting a primary document.   Era 3
LP 3 Delivering Mail Before 1800
This lesson plan contains five different activities that all use primary documents, such as letters, maps, newspapers, and tables, to explore how the post (mail) system operated in Cheshire County and New England in the last two decades of the 18th century. Activities integrate interpretation, math, and creative writing. By exploring the post system, students will also examine how peopled lived and communicated in Cheshire County during a time of great change.   Era 3
LP 4 Child Labor & Progressive Reform in New Hampshire
This lesson plan is design for grades 9-12, yet can be adapted for middle school students. It was developed in conjunction with a traveling exhibit created and mounted by the New Hampshire Historical Society entitled Before Their Time: Child Labor Through the Lens of Lewis Hine. This lesson plan consists of background information and an article on child labor and progressive reform in New Hampshire; 13 images taken by Lewis Hine of child laborers in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine between 1909 and 1911; 6 activities, which include reading comprehension and questions, classroom discussion questions, photograph and political cartoon analysis, writing, and drawing; and bibliography.   Era 7
LP 5 Lewis Hine and Child Labor: Photographic Interpretation
This lesson plan is design for students studying New Hampshire history and developing skills in photographic interpretation. It was developed in conjunction with a traveling exhibit created and mounted by the New Hampshire Historical Society entitled Before Their Time: Child Labor Through the Lens of Lewis Hine. This lesson plan consists of background information on Lewis Hine, child labor, and progressive reform in New Hampshire; 13 images taken by Lewis Hine of child laborers in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine between 1909 and 1911; classroom discussion questions; activities on photographic interpretation; and bibliography.   Era 7

Wonder Boxes

Hands on kits containing historical artifacts or reproductions on specific topics with teacher's study guide. Students are encouraged to handle the artifacts, answer specific questions about them and perhaps use them.

WB 1 Tools of the Trade
Eight historical tools of the 19th century are included in this hands on exercise. Students may try to determine what the tools are, how they were used and how the same task would be done today.   Multi Era 3 - 6: Late 1700s to Late 1900s
WB 2 Lighting Before Electricity
Six historical lighting devices and implements. Students may try to determine what the artifacts are, how they were used and how lighting technology developed in this country.   Multi Era 1 - 6: Beginnings to Late 1900s
WB 3 Abenaki Material Culture Before European Contact
Artifacts and reproductions that people used in everyday life before contact, along with teacher guide and activities.   Era 1
WB 4 Abenaki Material Culture After European Contact
Reproductions of European trade items that Abenaki people used after contact that often replaced tools and items made for natural materials found locally or traded for. Teacher guide and activities included with Wonder Box.   Era 2
WB 5 Colonial Period Games
Popular games kids and adults played during the Colonial period, including board, dice, card, and marble games. Teacher guide and instructions for each game included.   Era 2
