HSCC's Winter/Spring Featured Exhibit

"The Power of Water: A History of Water Powered Mills in the Monadnock Region" is a collaborative exhibit by the Monadnock Historical Societies Forum and is now on view in HSCC's Exhibit Hall until June 28, 2013 during regular museum hours. New Saturday Hours

Through December 2013, HSCC will be open on the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to noon.




Wyman Tavern Museum Now Open

The Wyman Tavern Museum is now open for the summer. Please join us for a tour, children's camps and afternoon programs, the Tavern Festival, and an archaeology field school. For tours the Tavern is open Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and by appointment. The spring meeting of the Monadnock Historical Societies Forum will be held at the Hancock Town Library and hosted by the Hancock Historical Society beginning at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will consist of our traditional Roundtable, updates on the Roundtable projects, and a tour of the Hancock Historical Society's museum and Monadnock Paper Mills. Wyman Tavern Festival. Save the date! A day-long celebration with reenactors, games, crafts, food, music, story telling, and lots of fun. Held at HSCC's Wyman Tavern, 339 Main Street in Keene, the festival celebrates the time period when Isaac and Sarah Wyman ran their tavern from 1762 to the early 1800s. Thursday-Friday - June 26-28, 2013
HSCC will offer a three-day Teacher Workshop on the settlement process of EuroAmericans in New Hampshire and the Upper Connecticut River drainage up to the end of the French and Indian War. Marcia Schmidt Blaine, Associate Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy at Plymouth State University, will be the workshop's scholar.

In addition to discussing who came and why people moved to New Hampshire; the process of settlement; the effects of warfare; the role of the environment; and the relationships between the French, English, and Native Americans, the workshop participants will have an opportunity to visit Fort No. 4 in Charlestown, New Hampshire for an immersion into contact zone society around the time of the French and Indian War, and to conduct and present research using HSCC's library and archives.

Friday Afternoon at the Tavern. This week's craft activity is on Making Candles and Writing Letters. Visitors will learn how to make tapered and dipped candles and to write with quill pens and to make envelopes for sending letters.

Revolutionary War Kids Camp at the Wyman Tavern Museum. Have you ever wondered what it was like for children during the Revolutionary War? This five-day camp will simulate what children did during this time period in American history. When Captain Isaac Wyman built and opened his tavern on Main Street in Keene in 1762, children contributed greatly to the running of the tavern. Each camper will become one of Sarah and Isaac Wyman's eleven children, and will learn, work, and play as if living during the Revolutionary war.

Opening of HSCC's Summer Exhibit 64 Miles: The Ashuelot River Art Exhibition. From the headwaters in Pillsbury State Park to its confluence with the Connecticut River in Hinsdale, the Ashuelot winds its way through the heart of Cheshire County. This beautiful river has left its mark on the landscape and on the areas history. The exhibition and sale of art will pay homage to the largely overlooked Ashuelot River as the great natural resource that it is to the region.

The opening reception will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in HSCC's Exhibit Hall. The exhibit, 64 Miles: The Ashuelot River Art Exhibition will be on view until Friday, September 27, 2013 during regular museum hours. For further information, please contact HSCC email or call 352-1895.

Digging Into the Tavern’s Past: Archaeology Field School at Wyman Tavern Museum. HSCC's Wyman Tavern is one of the most historic houses in Keene. Built in 1762, the Tavern has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The field school is designed for anyone interested in hands-on archaeology, material culture, and local history. Participants will gain experience in all aspects of a professionally run excavation site.

Showing of the film Here Am I, Send Me: The Journey of Jonathan Daniels. On the 20th of August 1965, Jonathan Daniels was killed protecting a young black woman while working to register African American voters in Alabama. Born and raised in Keene, Jonathan's story is one of sadness and inspiration. On the anniversary day of the death, Tuesday, August 20, 2013, filmmakers Lawrence Benaquist and William Sullivan will feature their film, and along with members of the community who knew Jonathan Daniels, lead a discussion on the making of the film and their remembrances of this fallen martyr to honor his life.

This special program will be held in HSCC Exhibit Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m. and cosponsored by the local Martin Lurther King, Jr. / Jonathan Daniels Committee. For further information, please contact HSCC email or call 352-1895.

Civil War Tour. Banner Tours and Travel of Peterborough is working with HSCC to offer a three-day trip to explore the "New Hampshire Presence at Gettysburg and Antietam." This Civil War tour with a New Hampshire focus will visit the battle sites at Gettysburg and Antietam, along with the National Cemetery were President Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address.
